What you should watch this Halloween 2017

Okay, every Halloween I turn on my apple tv (ok the last three halloweens) and try to pick a movie and then think WHAT MOVIE SHOULD I WATCH TO GET ME IN THE HALLOWEEN SPIRIT? It’s so hard. And sometimes I want something a little different than the classic Halloween films that pop up in top movies. So, I compiled a little list of some of my favorite spooooky movies to watch to get you halloween-ified.

For the family friendly ones:

  • Frankenweenie: I got free tickets to this film in college and took a friend to cringe through it. We were actually shocked at how sweet and funny this kid movie was. Like enough for me to want to purchase the film & re-watch it again! It follows the story of a kid whose best dog friend dies, and he tries to bring him back to life. Then crazy ensues.
  • Halloweentown: This may be a classic by now. But if you weren’t a Disney fan growing up, you need to watch Halloweentown (1, 2, and 3). Marnie learns she’s a witch and along with her siblings goes to her grandma’s home town of Halloweentown to solve a mystery. All the nostalgia vibes.
  • Young Frankenstein: This is an older movie from the 70s depicting an American grandson of the infamous scientist (frankenstein obvs), trying to prove that he’s not as insane as people believe, is invited to Transylvania, where he discovers the process that reanimates a dead body.

For mockumentary groupies:

  • What We Do in the Shadows: WATCH THIS FILM. Not only is Taika Waititi in it but so is Jermaine Clement— both hilarious. This is a mockumentary following a group of vampires living in New Zealand in present-day. It is amazing and perfect for halloween. If you’ve never heard New Zealand humor, you’re in for a trick and a treat. Okay, I’ll stop. But watch this!

For the classy vampire fans:

  • Only Lovers Left Alive: This is such a fun film. Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston take us a on a vampiric love story that spans time— it helps that they’re cool AF. Tom Hiddleston plays a depressed musician, and Tilda Swinton is his lover who comes to see him to cheer him up. This is disrupted by her semi-crazy little sister. Seriously love this.
  • Interview with a Vampire: This is a classic vampire movie with Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise chronicling their lives and turning a little girl into a vampire (Kirsten Dunst).

For the trendy horror/goonies lovers:

  • It: Get yourself to the movie theatre to watch It— the extraterrestrial clown who comes and haunts children in Derry, a small american town. A group of children bands together to fight Pennywise the clown as he terrorizes their town. This is a horror film, but it’s filled with amazing acting by kids, good humor, and a sequel is commmiinngg!
  • Stranger Things: Obsessed with this show & you should be too. Another band of children takes on a terrifying monster coming from the Upside-Down. This show has so much going for it— hello Winona Ryder, you slayed. Also Season Two comes out this FRIDAY!!! Binge now and forever be halloween-ed.

For the real life scares:

  • Mindhunter: I can’t stop talking about this new Netflix show that I binged in just like two days. Mindhunter is based on the true-life book Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit. It follows two FBI agents who interview serial killers in order to understand how serial killers think to be able to apply it to future crimes. Since it’s based on real life, the serial killers in the show were real people so it’s very creepy, but not too jumpy! Great thriller to watch without being too afraid.
  • Black Mirror: Okay these are scary episodes that are sometimes too close to home. Definitely worth a watch and seriously addicting!

And you can’t forget the basics: Hocus Pocus, Practical Magic, Harry Potter, Nightmare Before Christmas, Casper, etc.
